M T Hall’s debut release ‘NV’ (New Voice) on Pale Master examines the authenticity of the synthesised humanoid voice; a voice that has agency to affects us. The three tracks that comprise the EP and the subsequent reworkings by KLEFT, Kepla and Dialect compound this voice in a framework of shared ownership between human and machine.

To share is to enter into a relationship and this relationship facilitates a paradox. It forces us to become a body caught in an economy of tension and exchange.

M T Hall uses the Roland MC-505 to synthesise a voice, that moves between the three original tracks, carving out a space for itself that ranges from deliberate driving force to abstract decompression.

The syndication of the tracks to KLEFT, Kepla and Dialect create yet a further exchange. KLEFT’s dystopian re-imagining intensifies a breakdown that ends with both Dialect and Kepla bringing ‘NV’ to a state of disintegration; a feedback loop in which the machine reasserts its agency to connect with us.
