The machine is dammed. Possessed. ‘I’m Having a Fight’ sees Mat Colegate exorcise this instrument in an attempt to extract the pure soul that lies within. Because herein, amongst all this low end, kick thumping, metallic spikes and fight back, is the soul of the machine. A conciseness, that every once in a while, succumbs to melody and progression. Tracks build into tribal rhythms as this battle is played out. Nearly won as Mat chants over ‘Night Pox’ - a chant that seems to lift the curse - arpeggiators lift the movement to angelic heights, before all to soon being dragged back down into feedback and clatter.
The moniker then, Mighty Lord Deathman, should be taken with the irony it deserves. ‘…if I see another techno 12” with a picture of a decrepit tower block on it I will put my foot through the window of Phonica.’ Mat Colegate is on a mission here; techno is to surrender.
First edition pressing of this release is housed in a purified chrome shell.
